What is IPTV and how do you get it?

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is television delivered over your internet connection instead of a satellite dish or a cable box. To get it, you need three things: a stable internet connection, a device such as a smart TV, a Fire TV Stick or a phone, and an IPTV subscription whose login you add to a player app on that device.

What is IPTV?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. The channels travel to your home the same way a website or a video call does: as data over the internet. Your internet provider carries the data; it does not need to be your TV provider.

Live channels, sports events and on-demand movies and series all arrive through that one connection, and you watch them in an app on the screens you already own. Nothing goes on your roof or in your wall.

How does IPTV work?

Three pieces work together:

  1. The IPTV service streams live channels and keeps a library of movies and series you can start at any time. That library is called VOD, for video on demand.
  2. Your internet connection carries the streams to your home. A stable connection matters more than a fast one. As a reference point, Netflix recommends at least 15 Mbps for 4K streaming (Netflix Help Center).
  3. A player app plays the streams. Apps such as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, IBO Player, GSE Smart IPTV, VLC or Kodi do this job. You enter the login from your provider once, and the app loads the channel list and the TV guide.

The app and the subscription usually come from different companies, so you can switch apps and keep the same login.

IPTV vs cable and satellite

The trade-off: IPTV depends entirely on your internet connection. If your Wi-Fi is weak where the TV is, an Ethernet cable or moving the router closer usually helps.

What you need to watch IPTV

  • An internet connection that is stable in the room where you watch.
  • A compatible device: a smart TV (Samsung, LG), a Fire TV Stick, an Android TV box, an Apple TV, an iPhone or iPad, an Android phone, a Windows or Mac computer, or a MAG box.
  • A player app available on that device. Our setup guides show which apps work on which device.
  • A login from your IPTV subscription.

How to get IPTV in four steps

  1. Check your device and pick your device in our setup guides, which recommend an app for each one.
  2. Test before you pay. With Streamori, you can ask for a free 24-hour trial on WhatsApp, Telegram or email and test the channels and picture on your own screen.
  3. Choose a plan. Plans differ by length and by the number of screens that can watch at the same time. Streamori plans range from 1 to 12 months and 1 to 4 screens, from $5.00 a month on the 12-month plan (see prices).
  4. Add your login to the app. It arrives by email as soon as your payment is confirmed. Enter it in the app, and the channels and the TV guide load.

Xtream Codes, M3U or portal: which login do you use?

IPTV logins come in three common formats. Your app decides which one you need.

FormatWhat it looks likeUsed by
Xtream CodesA server URL, a username and a passwordTiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, GSE Smart IPTV
M3U linkOne long web address that contains the whole playlistIBO Player, Smart IPTV, Set IPTV, VLC, Kodi
Portal URLAn address entered in the box’s settings, linked to its MAC addressMAG boxes

If your app offers both, Xtream Codes is usually easier to type and also loads the TV guide automatically.

How to choose an IPTV service

Look for these before you pay:

  • A free trial on your own device, so you can check the channels you care about and the picture quality.
  • Clear prices, with the total for the whole period and the number of screens included.
  • Support you can reach in your language, through contacts listed on the official website.
  • Your app and device listed in the setup guides.
  • A written refund policy that you have read.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a satellite dish or a cable box?

No. IPTV comes through your internet connection. You only need a device with a player app.

Can I watch on several TVs?

Yes, if your plan includes several screens. With Streamori, you choose 1 to 4 screens that can watch at the same time.

Do I need a special IPTV box?

Not necessarily. Most smart TVs, streaming sticks, phones and computers can run an IPTV app. A box only helps if your TV cannot install the app you want.

Is there a TV guide?

Yes, in apps that support an electronic program guide (EPG), such as TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro.
